Data Rate When Exporting an MP4?
Posted by Amy Williams on November 13, 2008 at 5:17 pmI’m pretty green to video editing and I’m exporting for a client who has requested MP4s.
In the MPEG-4 Export Settings the file format is mp4 and the video format is mpeg-4 basic. Image size 640×480.
Now the data rates are what I typically have no idea about when exporting. It automatically sets the data rate to 64 kbits/sec. Is that what I need?
Is there a site that has recommended data rates for different settings? Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks!David Roth weiss replied 17 years, 6 months ago 3 Members · 8 Replies -

November 13, 2008 at 6:06 pmThere is no set it to this answer. You need to at least tell us what the delivery goals are, client wants the best quality and file will be on the hard drive or the movie will be posted on the web and needs to be streamed?
But Compressor has some presets that can give you good starting points.

Whenever asking a question here it always helps to state your ultimate objective. In other words, how is this MP4 going to be used?
Keep in mind, there are an infinite number of possible answers to your original question, however for a specific use, there’s typically only one correct answer.

November 13, 2008 at 6:24 pmSorry everyone. These are intended for the web. 320×240. And they’re of course looking for best quality at the smallest file size. Is this enough info? Like I said, pretty green!

November 13, 2008 at 6:29 pmI’ve given two different sizes now haven’t I? They asked for both. 320×240 as well as 640×480

November 13, 2008 at 6:42 pmThere are two iPhone presets in Compressor, one for each size you require, and both yield darn good MP4s. Give those a shot.

November 13, 2008 at 9:15 pmThose are beautiful. They come out as an m4v and I just changed the extension to mp4 so as not to freak anyone out. “What is THIS??” Anyways, works beautifully and the text looks great. Thank you!
