  • Data missing – FCP thinks files are reference quicktimes

    Background:

I am working on “making of” documentary for a TV series. I received HDV footage of selected clips for the series based on some selections I had made from standard DV reference files I had of the full episodes.

I received discs with quicktime file on them to replace the DV footage I had used with HDV 1080i60 files. I am not synced to any workflow etc. so I am expecting that the post house should have sent me self contained quicktimes.

    The Problem:

I can not import the HDV quicktime files into Final Cut Pro as they seem to react like reference files. I keep getting the “Movie File Missing Data…” warning but I do not have the reference files FCP wants me to find.

What is strange is the following:
    – the files play when opened with Quicktime player however missing audio which they should have.
    – the files import into other software like Premier but the audio is is digital noise
    – the file sizes are large so there is media there.

The media is there – maybe the audio is corrupt but I can work around that.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do? Or what is happening here? I am on a tight timeline and the post house I received the footage from is in another city.

    Thanks.

Do you need the audio? If not, then use Compressor to convert the files to ProRes. If so…you need to get those clips again, and tell them what happened. It is on them to get you clean proper copies.

I have tried compressor but it crashed.

What do you think this could be? How can I see the HD footage in Quicktime player but not be able to work at all with it in FCP?

Thanks for responding to the post.

    Thanks for the advice.

It was a quicktime issue. Clips were exported with Quicktime X and I am using 7. I had the post house send me the audio files (the missing data) and all seems to be fine.

    Time to upgrade.

    Thanks again.
