  • Darken window in the background

I have a window that showes a little in the background of a picture. The scene is supposed to be situated in the late evening while its dark outside. Unfortunatly the widescreen shot has captured the window on the side showing bright daylight.

Since the window is located far to the right, i figure i might be able to darken only that area of the picture, to make it look like night-time.

I don’t know how to do this as you might understand, so i was thinking someone here might be able to offer me some assistance!? 🙂

Btw. The picture is mostly still, but i might need to move the darkend area a little bit during the shot.

I use Final Cut Pro 5.

    Regards,
    Magnus

Duplicate the layer and use a matte to change only the specific area, and use tracking if it needs to move.
It’s all in the on-line help and the manual. Matte and tracking are the topics.

You can also try applying the color corrector. At the bottom left of the color corrector control panel is a limit effect triangle that will open up the limit effect controls. select the eyedropper and click on the window, then turn the whites and mids down. You’ll then be able to see what you’ve selected, if the whole window doesn’t darken, hold down your shift key and select other bright spots. You can fine tune your selection by adjusting edge the thin and softening controls, also play with the color controls to get the evening light the way you want it.

Bob has the right idea. However, my technique would involve unchecking both the chroma and sat tolerance checkboxes in the Limit Effects area of that tool. I then shape my matte based on Luma Only by having only the Luma checkbox checked. Try it.
