I am transferring old reel to reels into Vegas.
While I am transferring the color and brightness looks great.
If I play it on my computer (after I render it) it still looks good, but not as great.
However, after I burn a dvd and play it on a tv, it looks really dark. I am not sure if it’s a Vegas problem, a monitor problem, a tv problem. (I tried it on two different tvs and they both look dark), or a rendering problem etc.
What is the best way to address this problem? Even if I hook my computer to an external tv monitor won’t it still look dark?

I should also mention it is a 49 minutes. I am rendering MPEG 2 -Max 9,500,000 Aver: 8,000,000 Min: 2,000,000. Also clicking “Best quality” Everything else is at normal defaults.

Its not a vegas problem….Your computer screen is not
geared to give a true representation of what your video
will truly look like on a televison set…That is why you
have broadcast monitors to preview your projects while
editing…to see how it will really look on television or
as some editors do, just hook up a regular televison set thru
a firewire connection while they are editing….
If you search you will find a lot more info on this subject.

I have searched, but can’t seem to find what I am looking for. What should I be searching under?

Just curious, how are you transferring the film?

I was going to ask the same thing. The problem you have is that you don’t have a reference that you can trust. I’m not sure how you know that the transfer into Vegas is OK.

The first thing you need to do is calibrate your computer monitor so that you can trust it. I use a Spyder3Elite but you don’t need something that expensive but you do need something that is hardware based and can accurately calibrate your PC monitor.

The second thing you need to do is what Steve said, which is to use an external CRT monitor (or at a minimum a TV) to color correct on the actual device that it will be viewed on (which is a TV). Vegas can do external previews via firewire through a digital to analog converter like a Canopus ADVC-110, but you can even use a digital camcorder that allows passthru out to a TV that is hooked up to it. This is what Steve asked you to search for i.e., how to externally preview your video via firewire with Vegas.

You will also need to calibrate the external CRT monitor. There is a good tutorial on Video University called “Color Bars and How To Use ’em“. It is extremely important to have an external video monitor for color correcting and that both your computer monitor and external monitor are correctly calibrated. Only then can you determine what the video actually looks like.

I am using a DV Sniper made by Movie Stuff to transfer my reels.

I should say they aren’t directly imported into Vegas there is another software Cinecap that adjusts the speed. From there is makes avi files that I import into Vegas.
I am pretty happy with the results..no flicker, easy to use etc. I used to use the projection method and constantly struggled with flickering even with adjustable speed. The other big problem was the room needed to be dark and it was so frustrating and time consuming.
