We are currently testing Quicktimes extracted from a Codex recorder connected to a Dalsa 4K camera in preparation for a shoot in a few months time.

I don’t know quite how much detail I need to go into about how the DALSA and the Codex recorder work, but the quicktimes that we are using have been transfered as 1920 x 1080.

When I view them in Quicktime the inspector tells me that they are a CodexDigital – M-JPEG, 1920 x 1080, Millions with a data rate of 124.43 mbits/s, Inside FCP the Compressor is seen as Apple OpenDML JPEG. (I will eventually use 2k resolution as 1080i is squeezing the image v.slightly)

Dropping them into a timeline brings on the dreaded red bar….. They play (albeit slightly strobe-like), but no video output. Render the clips and everything works hunkydory……..

I’m looking for a sequence setting or a neat trick to be able to work with these files in FCP quickly and efficiently – maintaining the best quality possible.

So far my only solution has been to re-export the movies as ProRes HQ. Either from QT and then extract the TC info from the original and paste it into the new clip – or better practice through compressor (what a super handy tool that is!)…..

However both these solutions are resulting in a movie clip that is lighter overall than the original. Which isn’t really ideal.

If anybody has any thoughts as to a) how I could get the original files to work in FCP better, or b) why I’m getting the increase in brightness I would very much appreciate your input.

Many thanks in advance – even if you’ve taken the time to get this far!

    Regards,

    Mark.

the Codex recorder was set to record the wrong file type, Jpeg format video does not conform to the RT extreme engine and have to be rendered.

You have options for the QT recording format depending on which recorder you are using.
