  • Dailies workflow possible?

    Hi,

I’m wondering if it’s possible to use FCP X for ‘dailies’ workflow? F.ex. a very simple color correction of the footage. (I know that FCP X has very limited color correction.)

The requirements for dailies would be to render out the files with:

    – Identical file names
    – Identical timecode
    – Identical audio

to the original camera files (doesn’t have to be the same codec or wrapper), but with some corrections like a color correction.

I was shown a workflow with FCP 7 where you color each clip, put them in a bin and then batch export. But rendering times in FCP 7 made this workflow a non-starter for all but the very shortest shoots. FCP X is supposed to render much faster, correct?

And yes, I tried to look at the FCP X manual, but that seems to have even more holes in it than the app itself!

I wouldn’t normally look at a tool like FCP X, but the other tools on the market in the lower end price category all have holes in them that doesn’t work for me. (Resolve = no audio passthrough, STORM = only RED so far). I was hoping that FCP X might be able to do until one of the other vendors have their tool up to speed.

Thanks in advance for all help.

“(I know that FCP X has very limited color correction.)”

Not so. In fact it has more sophisticated color correction than older versions.

There is no batch export function in FCP.

    All the best,

Thanks for taking your time to answer my question.

Yes, you are right. Sorry, I wasn’t clear. I was thinking about all the sessions I’ve supervised with a colorist using Color that came with the old version. Compared to that the color tools in the FCP X manual looked rather simplified. For the kind of dailies work I’m looking to do it seems the new FCP X color correction tools should be sufficient, though. 🙂

I presume you mean FCP X? And since I got the attention of an expert: Is there is no other straight forward way of rendering out all clips with color correction and maintain clip names, camera TC and audio in FCP X?

    Thanks,

No, there is no way to do that in the current version of FCP. You could color correct a clip and export it, but each clip would have to be done separately.

    All the best,
