We are about to start post on a show that regularly records 8 channel DA-88 (DAT) audio back up tapes of certain scenes where multiple cast members are talking.
In the past, these tapes were used only in a pinch to dig out an errant line that seemed to not find it’s way into the mix. As such, the DA-88’s were only referenced in a protools session, not in off-line picture editing. This season, we’d like to have access to these discreet audio track during the off-line picture editing phase. I am appealing to the collective wisdom of this list to suggest to me the best way to “digitize” these DA-88’s into FCP. Ideally, there would be a way to break the “real time” barrier and get these files transfered 10X realtime ’cause we’re looking at hours of these tapes per day. Thanks for your help.

I have experience with Tascam Digital Mixers but not the DA-88…. but the process is the same.
Tascam sends 8 tracks out of it’s digital interface. The best interface I have used for Tascam digital audio is the MOTU 2408. I use it with Digital performer but FCP5 should see this interface. With the 2408, you can import up to 32 tracks of Tascam Digital Audio at once.
    Hope this helps.

    Correction
The 2408 can send 24 tracks on Digital Audio at once, not 32.
