D7000 Noise
Hey :
i’ve had a d7000 for about a year now , love the little animal but is it me not exposing correctly of is the video on this camera a bit noisy … especially in the blacks.
have shot stuff with 7D and it does not look this noisy.of course images looks lovely on camera and monitors but there seems to be noise in areas.
i have a trained eye so stuff like that bothers me
Just checking but is there something im doing wrong.

The D7K does not have the same resolution specs as the Canon’s however, it has a leg up on recording time and a well exposed take is viable regardless of that aspect.

For me, the D7K is a better camera because I own the D3S and mo bettah’ glass so depending on the pre shoot set up and post application, noise is more or less an issue to be resolved at the time of the shoot, which you surely do understand. f stop, ISO, lighting WB, ND Grad, lighting etc., interior, exterior and yadda.
Have you looked at the three Zacuto sets which compare these types of cameras?

According to this episodic comparative, in low light, the D7000 is actually right in line with Canon, or on some takes, slightly better.
Likely due to chip architecture, which is all Sony all the time for both brands, and Sony of course.
Nikon’s rumored new machine will have non compressed HDMI output, and could be a further game changer with ISO exceeding the soon to be release Canon.
Might I ask what your post applications are, transcode from the h.264 to what exactly, assuming, your attuned eye means AVID, FCP or CS5.5 or other?
Also, which lenses are you using?

Thanks for the reply. Yes actually i do know how to expose . been in this high end side of the biz for quite a while . I generally shoot RED and Alexa these days on Ads.
Im a nikon lover so i decided to take the DSLR plunge with a D7k since i needed a new still camera to retire my d80 anyway, and by retire i mean give it to my sister who annoy the living crap out of me hoggin the damn thing any way LOL.
Why i asked is because as i said , my trained eye sees stuff that others dont see. ive shown the footage to others who thinks it looks fantastic and think the camera is amazing and so do i but i see noise in certain areas i dont see in other cameras. and yes ive seen the “great camera shoot out”. i know for a fact the compression rate in the d7K is much higher that canons. so maybe thats the problem
Post gear , we use FCP with Kona LHi for editing , CS5 suite for mtn/gfx, we outsource 3D but use Maya and C4D from time to time and are in the middle of transitioning to scratch. and are looking to go back to AVID 6 now that things are open and nice and we transcode to prores, prores HQ & 444 depending on the project needs …..
use mpeg stream clip for batch transcode.Oh and we just got one of those sony OLED’s (holy shit) is all i have to say

I guess gain is gain and for the time being, the D7K does suffer slightly as compared to Canon, but the video here done with Howard Shore score, testifies that technique and skill can work just fine thank you.
Yes, a round of Red Epics bartender, for everyone but for mere mortals I’ll stick to Nikon regardless.
Besides, as a cinematographer, your eye will always see beyond the peer norm, and it’s also that eye which places you as the director etc. on spot with clients, good job on the viscosity takes BTW.
The ProRes bookend is CineForm for we of the PC persuasion.
