Any good way to do this? It’s beyond ridiculous that you can’t. And whats with the blue channel on the varicam? Whats with the Firestore drive? Whats up with panasonic having the mass public beta test thier products, it’s insane…..

    Can too.

[Pizmomac] “And whats with the blue channel on the varicam?”

DVCPRO HD is a compressed HD format. This is why it is capturable via firewire. They had to compress it somewhere, so they chose the Blue. Makes it a difficult format to composite, but still workable.

What specifically? Too many things for me to rag on. Well, they did finally add support for 24PN, but…I still prefer the P2 cards.

HDV was different? Any new format will have issues.

    What’s with this rant?

DIdn’t mean to offend to anyone, HDV is a disaster as far as I am concerned. I love panasonic, i guess I can deal with the crappy blue channel.

Everytime we try to insert with the D5 we have all kinds of issues. It seems to only insert for half of the time specified.

Well, trying to insert and NDF timeline to a DF tape is very tricky.

Are you working with an “F” model Varicam? Panasonic dropped the noise level by about 12db with the “H” model. The “F” model is the worst Varicam to shoot with and try to avoid it whenever possible.

I wonder how the camera is set up. The “H” model is incredibly clean with all the projects I’ve seen from it. HVX-900 looks even better.

Do you know what settings could conribute to more noise?

Is there a setting that allows the least amount of compression as possible?

Have you selected Panasonic-422 in your deck control prefs? I just insert edited a clip of 1080p w/ 8 channels of audio flawlessly onto a D5.

I’m not a D.P., I only know what the D.P’s tell me. I can tell you that the D.P. of “Good Eats” hit a real sweet spot with his latest settings on the Varicam along with some new lighting schemes and the show looks flat out amazing now.

The Varicam still does not like low light, you really need to get a lot of light on the set for the best looking HD.
