I’m sure this has been beaten to death before but I was not sure what I would type as a search. I have lots of video files which have a lot of unwanted footage (which is filling my hard drive)that I would like to trim without loosing any quality. So that I am left with the good stuff. I was wondering if vegas can do this. Thanks all.

You didn’t say what format these files are and what codec they use but depending on the codec, Vegas may not be the best tool for this because you would have to re-render all of the files which may mean a loss in quality.

    Hi John
They are either from my Canon hv20 which has hdv .m2t files or from my gopro hd which is mov. But I just had an idea. I could start vegas, open the file I just captured trim off all the rubbish and then when I save as I can just tick the ‘copy media with project’ option. Then I should be left with the good bits and just delete the veg file.
Should work, I’ll try it later.

That won’t work. Vegas will only trim the media of intraframe codecs. Both of those formats use interframe codecs. In that case, Vegas still copies the whole file. You can try it, but I believe you’ll come back and tell us that it didn’t work. If you convert the files to CineForm first, then that workflow would work.

Yea, I have tested it with CineForm and it works. Download the trial and see for yourself. If you decide to buy, I would recommend that you buy it from Videoguys.com for $99USD instead of directly from CineForm. Videoguys are sponsors here at the COW so it’s good to throw some business their way as a way of saying thanks for offsetting the cost of running these forums. There is even a COW5OFF coupon you can use to give you an additional 5% off of that price. 😉
