I just received an DVD from a client who wants me to use this media cut into a sizzle reel. Other than dubbing it to tape so I can cut it in, can I import this as usable media some how? There will be no online so TC isn’t an issue. They do own the footage but this is their master.
    Thanks

    #7 DVD into FCP

    Shane’s Stock Answer #7:

To start, I will state that trying to capture any DVD you bought or rented, be it a Hollywood movie or exersize video, is illegal. I will not give you any tips on how to bypass copy protection. It is there for a reason.

To capture footage from a DVD, you have a couple options.

    1) Route the DVD player to your DV camera or deck via the RCA cabling. Then you can put the footage you want ontp DV tape and have the benefit of timecode in case the need to recapture comes up.

    2) You can get a great application called DVDxDV (Google it). This opens up the DVD and allows you to convert the video to DV/NTSC footage. And it allows you to only convert what you want by allowing you to mark in and out points. The free version puts a big watermark across the center of your footage, but if you pay $25 for the standard version, that goes away.

Or you can use Mpeg Stream clip (google it). This is free.

Or use Cinematize. I’ve made my $60 investment back several times over.

I have a DVD whose icon appears as a folder with a red slash. I tried both applications (no luck) but I did not try cinematize yet. Have you had any luck with this type of folder? It says it is universal. BTW-This is my clients product, I am not duplicating illegal media, they only had a DVD to provide me with right now.

I might add mpeg stream clip also comes in handy when trying to work with video files which are not on DVD.

I had a client supply me with some mpeg footage with wierd cadence issues, and it was able to adaptively deiterlace the source to a very clean an usable progressive clip.

The only problem I have not been able to overcome with stream clip, is getting the program to bring the DVD audio along while it’s working on the video. I have been demuxing the audio as a separate step.

I also have DVDxDV Pro, which is also very handy, but does not do very well with 24fps DVD material with pulldown applied.

Just download (free) MPGStreamclip. If you go to re-edit the picture from the DVD, export as 8 or 10b Uncompress.
