  • Cutting Holes in a Solid

I want to cut some holes into a solid. I’m basically trying to make the sides of a film strip, which will be separate from the center of the film strip, so that the “sprockets” can animate while the center stays relatively stationary.

Adding one inverted mask for one sprocket is fine. But when I add another inverted mask, everything goes out of whack. Both masks are nullified, somehow. My idea was to make about twenty or thirty masks on a super tall strip and animate the position, but like I said, adding more than one mask screws things up. I don’t get it. Help, please!

Never Mind. The mode needs to be “subtract.”

I would do the shapes in Illustrator: two long lines with holes cut in, just like the sides of a film strip. Then I would animate the length of the strip to pass through the frame at constant speed- render that out with alpha and then loop that. You can then play with time warp for speed changes.
