Hi, I’m trying to learn FCP and I already know Avid pretty well. I was wondering if there were any way to fine tune cuts in FCP like you can in avid. In avid you can have 2 screens one the end of the first clip and one the beginning of the next…it gives options to change the size of either clip by either 1 frame or 10 at a time. Then you can preview the changes before you apply them. I’ve been looking for something comparable in FCP but all i see are the tools that require a mouse to move back in forth. Maybe I’m missing something though because that seems like a pretty necessary tool to have. Any suggestions?

Yes, the trim by one frame tool is there. You highlight the edge of the clip and (doing this from memory at home without looking at my work machine)press the { and } keys for 1-frame trims plus or minus. Or maybe its the : and ” keys… What helps me is I specified a Logic Keyboard with all the main FCp functions printed on the keys, helps a lot. But you can also find these yourself by finding the “keyboard mapping” in FCP and see what each one is pre-set for.

Moreover, if you want to keep your Avid habits, you can use this feature to re-map the FCP keyboard shortcuts to be identical to what you used in Avid.

And yes there is a 2-box rolling trim mode, try pressing and holding the mouse between two clips, then dragging. or select the rolling trim button on the right hand side of the screen. Some features you want to use require you hit the apple-cloverleaf-looking key or the control key at the same time.
