    Hello,

I’m learning MC this week. I’m a FCP user transitioning over to Avid for a new job. I was hoping to copy a lot of the shortcuts that I’m already used to. So far so good until l needed to map the command key or option key. Doesn’t seem to work. I’ve had success with the shift key that’s it.

    Is it doable in MC?

Equipment: 2.8 ghz 8 core Intal Mac Pro, 20 gig of ram
Aps: CS3 Production Bundle, FCP Suite 2, Avid Media Composer

Nope. You can map the standard keys and Shift+standard keys, but can’t map Cmd+Keyboard, Alt+Keyboard, or Ctrl+Keyboard. In this way, Avid is less keyboard mappable than FCP.

That said, I highly suggest you start with the Avid default keyboard layout and get used to it. It’s been refined over the last 15 years or so to reflect the most commonly used functions and is, in my opinion, much more logical than FCP’s. Plus, there are commands in FCP that don’t translate to Avid and vice versa, so it’s typically best to learn it the Avid way then change it if you don’t like it. Because if you try to drive Avid like you drive a FCP system you’ll go insane.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll stop trying to find a way 🙂

In regards to mapping custom keys, the way I cut in FCP is very similar to how I’m learning to cut in Avid. So I really don’t think I would go that crazy. In a lot of ways I’m finding quite a few similarities. Then again maybe I’m already crazy.
