Custom title template
Posted by Mitch Jordan on May 24, 2013 at 2:52 pmCan I create a custom title template in Premier Pro? I work in a shop with multiple editors. We use a lower third template that I created in After Effects, but most of our editors are not After Effects users. I’d like to add my template to the existing title templates in Premier Pro so an editor can simply open it from there. All the tutorials that I’ve found refer to modifying existing templates to create a new one, not creating one from scratch. We’re switching from FCP7, and I’d like a similar functionality to opening a Motion template inside FCP.

May 24, 2013 at 3:14 pmI looked at that page. It appears that you can only modify existing templates to create your own. My lower third has elements that I created in Photoshop and animated in After Effects. Reading Adobe’s help page, I can only import files as templates that have the .prtl extension. How can I create one of those?

May 24, 2013 at 3:28 pmYes. I have a logo reveal in the left corner and then the lower third slides out from behind it.

May 24, 2013 at 3:53 pmIf you are not using Something like dynamic link you will have to render out the logo reveal from AE as a clip and then design a preset move in PrPro to use for the txt elements. It might be worth it to design the template in AE and then teach the other editors how to replace the txt.
Then all the editors would have to do is drop this AE comp into PrPro with Dynamic link for the text builds.
If they can use motion they will be able to understand how to do this in AE.
To the best of my knowledge the title tool in PrPro does not work with motion and you cannot add key frames, i could be wrong

May 24, 2013 at 4:01 pmThanks for the help. I was starting to think along those lines. Do you think it’s possible to also create a new Premier Pro project, import the motion graphic from AE, add the text, and save that project as a template? Editors could import that Premier Pro project, edit the text, and nest that sequence on their sequence. Might be a good work around for the time being.

May 24, 2013 at 4:11 pmThe only import options for the title tool is PNG or TGA. You cannot import a file to create a templet using anything else, please understand that I am only sharing baswed on my limited knowledge of the program and someone else may know how to do this.
in PrPro click title in the menu and open “based on template. In the template chooser there is an arrow on the right side with a pull down. This is where you would import files to create a template and only the title tool can create a valis template file so your workaround would not work.

May 29, 2013 at 4:58 pmThanks for the help. I think we may drop the motion in our lower thirds so that I can load the template in the Titler. I think that will be easiest with multiple editors with various skill sets.
