    Hi,

I’ve seen a few posts on custom shatter maps but haven’t seen one about this yet. I would like my text to explode into custom pieces in a certain shape. I want them all to look the same. They would be in the shape of a butterfly. I have actually made a butterfly in Max that is animated and was rendered with it’s alpha. I used Trap’s Particular to have a flurry of butterflies that emanate from the explosion which looks really nice but I would also like the shatter to turn into them as well in stills if not animated. Is this possible?

    Thanks!

    Hey Todd,

You can make shatter maps the same as you do with displacements. Just make a black and white grid of your butterfly sillhouette in a precomp and set it as your shatter map. voila!

Oh and you could also add in an adjustment layer with CC Force Motion blur to enhance your shatter effect. if you don’t use force motion blur, it won’t blur at all (dunno why it’s not built in like Particle World)

Thanks! I was playing with an alpha pic I rendered from Max and it hadn’t worked. I’m gonna try that!

What are you doing with the spaces between the butterflies? Shatter maps as you are describing require careful tesselations.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

    Hi,
I am trying to do the same thing, have an object shatter into hearts, did you ever figure out how?
    Thanks

I can’t really remember exactly what I did. I do remember that I used Trapcode Particular and used my butterfly as a custom particle. That was awhile back though.
