I used the pen to make a path – then right click within the path to save a custom shape

when i make a custom shape on my document, on a new layer or the background, I get the outline, but no fill, regardless of the color selected. In fact all of the custom shapes do this. What am I not doing?

    Thanks

    Hi Mike,

You are okay here… When you add the shape to your project, it is being added as a ‘Path’. This Path can now be further manipulated, have a stroke or fill color added and the many other things one can do to a path.

    To fill the path,

    > Click on the Path tab (in the same palette as the layers tab)
    > Select the desired path
    > Click on the ‘Fill with Foreground Color’ button at lower left.

To learn more about the Paths Palette checkout the help file, and maybe search for a tutorial on the same.

    Hope this helps,
    Troy

Thanks for the tip – I actually figured it out – Next to the custom shape tool in the tool options bar, I had selected path only, as opposed to fil path – not sure of the exact names for these icons, but that solved the problem – I had turned off the fill when I was experimenting with the pen tool.

One wa to learn their names is to turn tool tips on in your preferences…

    then just hover over…

It helps me learn the name of things (which helps as you move forward)
