I just booted up AE CS4 and all of my custom render presets are missing as are my custom workspace layouts and custom animation presets. Anyone know how I can get them back?

Sounds like your preferences were trashed and replaced with the defaults. If you have a backup of your prefs file you can replace it. Otherwise I believe you’ll have to recreate the workspaces and render presets.

The animation presets shouldn’t be affected though, they’re usually stored in the presets folder as individual files.

I do remember a window popping up mentioning something about settings and changing the name to old but I was in a hurry and didn’t read the full message. Because I’m an idiot. Is it possible that this might have something to do with my preferences? Where are my preferences saved?

Not sure where they are on a PC but on a Mac the are in user/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/9.0/

where user is your username and the number (9.0) is the version. I have 8.0, 9.0 and 10.0 on mine.

on a PC, you’ll likely find the old files renamed *.old in the folders here:
    C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects\##.#\*
