I am fairly new to expressions and not sure if the following question is possible within afx:

I’m working on an animation which uses a field of noise or visual static as the main element – specifically in afx I have been using cell pattern.

    A sample animatic is here

i would like to customise the noise so that it is less regular and more truly random.

Eg according to the image link below, the cell pattern I am currently using in afx relates to pattern d, a so called quasi-random distribution, whereas I would like to create a distrubution closer to pattern a.

Could anyone point me in the direction of an expression type which might help with this.

    Many thanks

you might look at cc ball action or cc star burst…

for ball action, use the scatter property to control the random spacing of the particles, grid spacing and ball size control the size and spacing of the particles. changing the instability state will change the pattern.

cc start burst will also randomize the particle size to some degrees (not control of that though), and it would only produce a static random texture…. but if that could work for you, just set speed to 0 and and adjust the scatter, grid spacing and size properties.
