Custom Graticule Import
Posted by Paul Korver on March 9, 2012 at 4:37 pmWe need to create some custom Graticules to do pan/scan prep for 4K ARRILASER film recording. Has anyone done this?
I’m assuming we just create the a custom Graticule Matte in Photoshop and save off as PNG/DPX/TIFF that we could bring into Resolve and would have precise framing lines that we can superimpose on our picture to set precise pan/scan setting. Then turn off / remove the graticule from picture and render out properly “prepped for ARRI” DPX sequence.
We already know all the pixel dimensions just wondering about the process of creating/importing the graticule alpha matte.

March 9, 2012 at 5:27 pmIn Resolve for Mac at least, I am not aware of anyway to do this. There is a safe area option… Which is customizable to some degree, but I’m not aware of a method for overlaying a graticule still onto the format viewer. You could make a dpx, bring it in and grab a still. Then toogle that still as a way to check. Assuming that you aren’t able to get the safe area settings to suit you.
EDIT: I just checked in the file system (within the app and in Applicatin support, couldn’t find any references to graticule or markers, safe area, etc) seems the safe area markers are generated within app, so you couldn’t even reverse engineer into it by replacing the source images.
Sorry.

March 9, 2012 at 5:54 pmI haven’t had a need for it since switching form AJA to BMD, but could you not create the file (say pang w/ alpha) and put it over the image via DS keyer? Or is that another feature lost by having to use Decklink?
That way it would never impact your Resolve processing… and it would be super easy to turn on and off….

March 9, 2012 at 5:59 pmCool idea. But the decklink card would be unable to do this if being used by resolve. He could have a device down the line add that. The original videohub was able to do this as well.

March 9, 2012 at 6:15 pmI always do this in the AJA control panel when onlining, for bug clearance…. It’s proved time and time again to be super helpful.
I wish BMD would take a stronger look at some of the things their competition are/have been doing….

March 9, 2012 at 8:18 pmMost professional level grade monitors have programmable hash marks.
Zero-load on the processing in that case.jPo

March 10, 2012 at 1:42 amWe do have a 23″ HD Sony BMV Grading LCD monitor which has some graticule presets and probably some customizable settings… but our timeline setup in resolve is 4K 4096×3112 so may be difficult to gauge exactly since it will be pillar box coming into the monitor full ap.
We’re going to do a goofy work around where we make the lines in Photoshop and bring those in as and “offline” version then do the 50% fade up to reveal the line. I agree it would be great to bring in an some sort of a custom alpha for this.

March 10, 2012 at 8:42 amYou need more gpu ram. Turns out you need at least 3gb of gpu ram to reliably do 4k. Though I’ve managed to do limited projects with 1.5gb.

March 11, 2012 at 2:08 amI suspect it would already work with v8.2. The xyz toggle is already there. Just waiting for the card to ship. Bigger issue is bus speed. Need pcie 3.0. New Mac pro or pc
