Curved Cylinder
Posted by Chris Holland on July 16, 2007 at 5:39 pmHello all,
I am a beginner with this so I may be missing something simple here.
I am trying ot take a cylinder that I have made long and thin, like an elongated pencil, and am trying to curve it so that only the bottom part is curved then it straightens out. Almost like 1/2 of a U.
It is for a growing timeline that is in 3d and the curved parts would come off of the main timeline.
I am using version 9.6 and don’t have any add-ons.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you need any more info let me know.
Thanks.

July 16, 2007 at 7:35 pmHi, you can achieve this by having enough height segments in
your cylinder (if it is still a primitive) or subdivide it accordingly if it’s a polygonal object (via the make editable button). Once your cylinder is subdivided you can use a bend deformer and make it a child along with the cylinder of a null. I would send you a scene file but I have R10…I hope this helps…

I actually have CD4 10 at home so if you could send that scene file that would be great, as I am still a little confused.
I added a bend transformer and it seemed to squeeze the capsule where the bend started and it also flattened the end. It wasn’t curved enough.
I didn’t understand the significance of adding the null. Do I just add a null then add the cylinder then add the bend to that. I did add a bunch of height segments.
Thanks for the help.

July 17, 2007 at 1:32 pmi think it would be far easyer to use a spline, circle and a sweep nurb like this link.
https://www.randyarchy.com/curve.c4d.zipit is in version 9.0 so you can open it with any later versions.
good luck

Thanks a lot. That is extremely helpful. I would have never known to do that. That is my biggest stumbling block with this program. It is so huge that I just have no idea how to model things I want to model. I just don’t know where to start.
I thought I might be able to do it with the splines but i couldn’t get the thickness.
Do you, or anyone else, know of a good mdoeling training book for C4D that gets into modeling and outside of the basics. Almost like a step above beginner training ?
Thanks again, that really did help tremendously.

July 20, 2007 at 11:47 amI started with the Cinema 4D workshop book by Arndt von Koenigsmarck …its a great overview of the whole program. It is a hard to follow since he wrote the tutorials in paragraph form rather than point form but it shows the program better than any other.
I also read a book called exploring 3d modeling with cinema 4d. It is easy to use but i found it a little short sighted…meaning it is good for the first time user but there is so much more to cinema than modeling….and the workshop book covered the same stuff only better.
I got both of those from amazon.com.
if you prefere video tutorials lynda.com has a very good series for cinema 4d….its like 25 dollers u.s and then you can watch all the videos all you want for a month…there is like 5 hours of cinema stuff.
good luck
