I have some down time between projects and thought I might use the time to wipe things clean and install Snow Leopard and FCS 3 (both of which are sitting there quietly in their unopened boxes).

What’s the current opinion on moving over to Snow Leopard/FCS 3? No hurry for me as my editing system works fine now with Leopard and FCS2.

Just wondering about how y’all feel about things after the latest SL update.

    Thanks

We’re not running Snow Leopard and while I originally planned to update all the systems to SL over the christmas break, I don’t think we’re going to do that now. Just too many small issues all over the place with that OS.

Systems are very stable with 10.5.8 and Studio 3. BUT we did a full clean install of Leopard and then updated to 10.5.8 before installing Studio 3.

I was between projects and installed Snow Leopard. I bought a new 1TB hard drive, removed my Leopard HD, and did a clean install of Snow Leopard and all of my applications. It took me a couple of days to install everything but so far I haven’t had any problems. I just finished two projects (a 30 minute SD and a 10 minute HD) and didn’t have any problems.

    Hi Michael,

I kept one system on 10.5 while updating the other to 10.6. That was about four weeks ago. Just yesterday I switched the second to 10.6 after a plug in I use often was updated to work with Snow Leopard. I don’t notice any differences between the two OS’s when working within any of the FCS applications, but I really like the GUI and additional features of 10.6. I don’t use any additional capture cards or third party interfaces that might cause conflicts.

I know some people are not having any issues, but others are,
so unless you really need to I’d wait for another update or 2
for snow leopard and fcs 3. I’m not planning in updating till early 2010.

I’m in the process of doing this now. I pulled out the 10.5.8 drive and replaced it with a new SATA. I’ll keep the 10.5.8 on a shelf if there are problems. It just takes days to reload everything. Plus I have to do it on two complete systems and a server for shared storage. I’ll let you know how it works out.

I’ve had Snow Leopard and FCS3 sitting on a shelf since they came out and now will get a chance to play with them. So far I like the robustness of SL and the interface tweaks.

    – Snow Leopard had some issues with the FW ports but now on 10.6.2 everything seems to be fine.
    – FCS 3 runs pretty well without any problem so far
    – big downside for me is that the P2 Express Dual Card reader doesn’t work with my MacBookPro’s Express Card Slot, I think a driver update would be essential for this.So at the moment FW only for capturing cards.

From what I have read Duel has dropped future support, there is no plans for a SL driver. While there is a love/hate relationship with the adapter it is my far the cheapest solution (under Leopard) for P2 users.

No future support for SL with Duel reader??? It sucks!
Actually I never did research for the future plans for this adapter on SL because it was evident for me that there will be soon.
Well, if it’s true and not just a rumour this is one thing I really DON’T like in SL!

…and, XDCAM transfer is busted under Snow Leopard. As others have mentioned, you should do a fresh install on a new disk to try it out. I’ve been tinkering around with it (Color 1.5 is great!) and it seems so far so good, but for client projects I’m sticking with 10.5 for now.

You can always buy a cheap USB drive and install SL on that. Intel macs support booting from USB drives. This way you can test everything while not putting your current setup to any risk whatsoever.
