current freelance rates — print studio production artist
I have been working fulltime as a production artist in advertising in NYC for over 5 years now. I am now freelance and consider myself a Sr. Production Artist. I realize that there are a lot of factors for calculating a freelance rate, but I also need to hear what others in NYC are charging to freelance in places like an ad agency print studio. When I freelanced 6 years ago for a big place, I got $40 and hour. Recently I have freelanced through a placement agency and my cut was $30 per hour. Now I’m looking for independent freelance work and I’m interested to know what others are charging in NYC right now for studio work doing InDesign mechanicals, comp retouching, some presentation work…you know, all of the general tasks done in a typical NYC agency studio. Any help would be appreciated, even ranges would help a lot. Thanks COW community!
