    I’ve noticed this since atleast Vegas 8 or 9 and am currently using version 11 x64. On OCCASION when working on a project with multiple video tracks, the preview playback speed will decrease to a crawl, when other times on the timeline the playback is fine. I finally figured out that if I either mute all the other tracks or solo the track I want to view, playback will miraculously be back to normal speed. Its as if Vegas was trying to render the clip beneath the clip I wish to view; there are no fx applied on any of the clips or tracks and all tracks are at 100% opacity and all the clips are in a resolution that matches the project settings. Seems very weird. Maybe there is something else that I am not seeing that needs to be tweaked? Can anyone please advise?

    If you’ve got GPU acceleration applied in Preferences try turning it off.

    What is your media and what are the specs of your PC?

    If you’re finding each new release of Vegas is going slower, then maybe you need to audit your PC’s specs against the work Vegas is asking it to do?

    Yes Vegas does render every audio and video track into the preview, or otherwise how else would you watch the preview?

    Just the preview render is a quick render that is at a low quality so quality will improve after rendering.

    If the preview rendering is taking forever, then I suspect that the standard rendering is taking even longer.

    I suspect that either you don’t have enough RAM on your CPU and or your video card doesn’t have enough RAM and or you don’t even have a GPU video card you just have a CPU partition.

    hmm…I wouldn’t agree that vegas renders all the video tracks for viewing in the preview window. You can do a simple test by making stacking two tracks and bringing the top track opacity down so that there is a mix of the two images, upon playback of the timeline; you will notice that the cpu is taxed a bit more than if you were just playing the top track completely normal (eventhough there is a clip beneath). Plus, it would be a waste of effort and efficiency for Vegas to always attempt to playback all the track layers when only one is being seen.

    BUT, that does seem to be what is happening every once in a great while. It doesn’t happen to me often and I don’t know why it does it. Hence my inquiry.

    Multicam editing does require a beefy system. If you are using AVCHD source footage, it is highly compressed and requires even more horse power to preview than, say, DV footage. I regularly edit using up to 4 cameras. Even on my system the preview does stutter occasionally. I typically can only edit with the preview set to full.

    Having lots of RAM (8+ GB recommended), a 64 bit O/S, NVIDIA GTX570 (or higher) video card and 64 bit windows 7 and a fast CPU (i7) and a separate HDD are necessary for a smooth editing experience.

    If you are using a laptop, then you are mostly probably underpowered, and there is little you can do by way of an upgrade.

    My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 11 (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

    I realize that multicam does require a significant amount of horseposer, since the system has to parse additional footage simultaneously, but the problem I’m having is NOT an attempt to use multicam. I only want to preview a standard single stream of footage; simple good ol’ fashioned editing, nothing complicated. But yes, the system acts (as I said, on occassion) sluggish as if it were parsing multiple tracks simultaeously.

    I now realize I worded my original posting by mentioning the ‘other’ tracks below, but when I edit, clips tend to get shuffled around often on 3 or 4 video tracks. I never intended to do multicam. From what I always understood and observed is that the top most track is what the system will preview unless the top most track or clip opacity is set to something less than 100%

    I didn’t think it was important to mention my specs, because most of the time, my system plays the clips fine. Once in a blue moon, this phenomenon happens. It can be deduced that my system specs are not causing the problem, but a setting in Vegas MUST be the culprit. This is because I can toggle the increased performance by either muting the tracks below, that are never supposed to be seen anyways OR by soloing the track that is supposed to be seen. When I do that, the performance of the playback goes back to its normal playback.

    Quite the contrary. Your system specs are important. Playback of content smoothly in windows media player is not a good indicator of your how your system should perform in Vegas. The amount of RAM, CPU, video card, disk i/o and type of data bus (USB 2.0/3.0, SATA I/II/III) will affect your editing experience. With Vegas, the most important determinant of editing performance is your CPU. You should be using at least a dual core CPU with at least 4 GB RAM if running Windows 7.

    Yes, yes, I realize all that, of course a faster system is idea. I have a quadcore amd with 12gigs of ram running windows 7. BUT! as I mentioned in all my posts, my edit system runs pretty good with some occassional hiccups which I cannot ever reproduce; by occasional, I mean maybe every fourth or fifth project, but it also depends on the complexity of the project. Anyways, the fact that I can already edit fine, it can be inferred that some other factor is causing the infrequent problem; the weird phenomenon as I described in the original post.

    Thank you for all your attempts to assist, but I think we’re having a communication breakdown, because I keep repeating myself, so sorry if I sound short, its just frustrating. I’m trying to word things as detailed as possible. Thank you.
