  • Curious about preview, playlist, and next chapter “issue”

Posted by Martin Tiller on April 16, 2005 at 6:49 pm

I just wanted to ask and see if anyone else has noticed this or had problems with this.

I had two timelines in a playlist connected to a “play all” button.

Both timelines had three chapter points each.

During preview I could skip to each chapter in the first timeline, but not from the last chapter of the first timeline to the first chapter of the second timeline.

But after several reads of the manual and tutorials I could not figure what was wrong, so I burned one disc to test it out on my set-top player.

Well, the playlist performed as it should on the settop, going from the third chapter of the first timeline to the first chapter of the second timeline.

So I left the preview issue alone and just finished up the project and it still works fine.

I posted this to share and see if anyone else has noticed this.

I am going to recheck the project in Encore and see if the preview issue is still there.

If it is, then this will be the first bug I share with Adobe.

    Just thought I’d share.

at what position was the last chapter marker on the FIRST timeline???
What some of us do is to add another chapter marker 1 second from the end of a timeline as this will now allow you to skip to that chapter and then rollover to the next timeline. The only downside of this method is that the last second of that timeline will play before it rolls over to the next timeline..

I have already recorded and uploaded a tut on how to add this chapter marker to the last second of a timeline.. check it out here https://asvideoproductions.com/doogs/adding%20chapter%20markers.zip hope this helps.

    David,
Thank for the info, and I see what you’re saying.

But my point was that the playlist, in the Preview window under the file menu, does not skip forward from the last chapter to the first chapter between the first and second time. Again only in the Preview Monitor does this happen.

On my set top player a Pioneer 414, a six year old player, the playlist skips forward from timeline 1 to timeline 2 correctly when played there and in Windows Media Player.

I have finished the project and burned all the copies I needed. So I went back to double check to see if the issue was still there, and it was.

So I’m just posting this as a bug, because if the playlist works correctly on a burned DVD, then it most definately should work correctly in the preview monitor. And I wanted to see if anyone else has noticed this as well.

This is not a bug, but a feature that only some DVD players offer.

Some DVD players (such as my Pioneer) will perform a title search when you press the Next button at the end of a timeline, which will take you to the next title (timeline) on the DVD . Others (such as my Sony) will not. The Pioneer’s feature, as nice as it might be, is not the standard for DVD players, and Encore’s Preview mode reflects that.

There is a way to get what you want, which I believe David has outlined for you in the other reply.

    Thanks for the clarification.

I didn’t realize that about the Pioneer player, so now I’ll consider using another player for reference in the future.

I’m sorry I didn’t mean to dismiss David’s reply, and I’ll certainly add his idea to future projects.

    Thanks again for the clarification.
