  • CTI jumps frames during RAM Preview

I find myself having to build a graphic opener with music for the first time in AE. Needing to time elements to the music, I’ve discovered something that probably has been happening since I’ve owned AE, but I’ve never paid attention to til now. When previewing, my CTI moves forward by jumping several frames at a time, instead of playing smoothly. This makes timing to the music beat all but impossible, at least for me. Is this a normal thing for AE?

Perhaps if I posted this to the correct forum, I’d get an answer….

    Eh, I’ll answer it here.

Traditionally, working in AE, you don’t get RT playback of visual elements – you put in the audio, and hit the * key to drop markers where you intend for thigns to happen.

You don’t have the Skip value set to something other than 0, do you? (See “Use RAM preview to play video and audio”.)

But if my CTI is skipping 10 frames at a time, and you can only place a marker at the CTI ‘s location, it would be a chore to drop markers to match any music beat, if not impossible. And I know that projects are timed to music quite often, correct? So how is it done?

Nope, it’s set to 0. So, this is an anomaly with my machine? Does your CTI skip 10 frames at a time as well? I can’t believe that this is the norm, it’s got to be specific to my setup.

Mine does the same, did it also in CS4.
Have not found a solution yet.

I’m having the same issue, and at some times the cti does not move at all during playback of ram previews. Not only that, but the entire interface starts “flashing” when I scrub anything, be it the cti or roll down a panel, that led me to believe that this is due a lack of enough resources on my computer. I have 8gb ram but I’m working a 1280×1080 comp with lots of expressions, cameras and many nested comps.

I’m getting a more powerful computer in the following days, will let you know if the situation improves once I test this project in that one.
