I’m switching from FCP7 to CS6 Premiere and finding it a bit of a headache, especially working with Red .R3D files. I love the real-time playback but I’ve had so many other problems.

I’m using the trial version waiting for my box set to arrive next week.

When I import the Red footage it makes multiple copies of the same clip with different names, eg for A002_C001 I’ve got:

    A002_C001_0419UG_001.R3D
    A002_C001_0419UG_002.R3D
    A002_C001_0419W9_001.R3D

All appear as identical clips when dragged into the timeline. The last one doesn’t even exist! So it just says offline in the timeline.

I used just the first copy for each real and clip number and deleted the rest in the timeline. All clips were online. I then tried syncing with Plural eyes but when I imported the synced file, all the clips were suddenly offline. I went to re-link them to the media and none of those file numbers exist in the red file subfolders so there is nothing to link to! It’s so weird. Has anyone had this problem?

It’s not just on my machine. I had the same problem trying to cut offsite on a client’s machine.

Try using the Media Browser in Premiere Pro instead. It specifically helps with things like clip spanning and might be the issue you’re dealing with. It also helps keep projects tidy because media isn’t added to the project until you take it to the timeline or project panels.

For all digital file based media, I recommend using the media browser.

Thanks Dennis. I tried importing using the Media Browser pane but I’m still getting the same problem. Also CS6 Premiere does not recognise all .r3d files. Some it says are an ‘unupported format’ even though they are exactly the same format as the clips that do import. I’m having this problem with every .r3d media based. Can anyone help?

Did you ever solve this issue James? I have the same thing happening here. I do know some of them are Proxy files, but wanted to know how to just use the proxy to edit with , then link to the large raw file for the final export. Hope you can help!

Could one have TOO many lenses? I submit that one cannot.
