CS5 Source in/out points change timeline clips…??
Posted by Chris Good on January 21, 2011 at 2:43 pmI’m working with Premiere CS5. I want to use multiple sections of a source clip in a single timeline.
I set in/out points in the source monitor, then move a clip to the timeline. The I go back to the source monitor and set another set of in/out points, and BAM!!! my timeline clip has been changed to match the new in/out points. I don’t want this behavior….. how do I turn this off?
I can’t remember ever running into this in CS3 or CS4…
Any help would be appreciated.

January 26, 2011 at 7:50 pmTry creating sub-clips for each selection, that way you will avoid the problem. I’ve put up a tutorial on sub-clips if you need it.

September 11, 2012 at 1:16 pmIn Cs6 I got trapped into this same behaviour but it doesn’t always happen. The problem is identifying when it occurs as I haven’t found any link/unlink to source or auto update option. I have to alt click on i/o points in source in order to add other sections from same clip. Did it not once allow multiple i/o regions all being visible?
Making subclips is not a practical solution at this point as we’re cleaning out good areas from multiple takes, most of which are on the same topic or even more could be in the same sentence so its not like AE precomps.

September 13, 2012 at 12:58 pmHi Evan
I’m not sure that there was ever an option for multiple i/o on the same clip – you just overight the present i/o when you create new ones.
However, if the clip is already in the timeline the old i/o points are respected and you only get the new i/o points when you bring in another version of the clip to the timeline. So to have multiple bits of the same clip with differnt i/os just make sure you drop clips on the timeline each time you set a new i/o.
Hope this helps

I did that but it is not consistent.First I thought that if the TL clip was selected and I change source mon i/o it changes the same clip i/o in the TL. But even if no clip is selected in TL this seems to happen…My solution for now is to just go to the source mon. and right click to clear i/o points. Then add new ones for next segment.
Of course I have used markers with descriptions to identify the regions, though I find that they are still a bit clunky in use: double clicking on marker which brings the edit marker dialogue box, shows in point and duration, not out point (as the panel does)So one cannot copy paste from TL. Marker Name on Edit marker box is not translated to the markers panel which has no Name for each marker, only the comments/description.
One cannot delete a marker from marker tab nor rearrange them.
My last marker rant 🙂 is that if I have a marker on the TL that I want to move a bit left or right, perhaps where my CTI is, it cannot happen, because once I click on the marker my CTI goes just to the marker so I loose my previous CTI position…Only by adding a new marker and deleting the old, or going to the marker panel and pasting current time (doing this in edit marker is again not allowed). It would also be useful to be able to change color labels on markers just like with tracks. -

September 14, 2012 at 8:16 amHi Evan
Have you tried Prelude yet? I wonder if it isn’t more the program you want for the type of shot selection you are trying to do? It has different color markers for the different functions that you may want to use and I believe (although I’ve not checked) that it keeps those colors over in PP … It may be worth checking out?
All the best

September 14, 2012 at 10:50 amThanks for the suggestion Andrew, hadn’t looked into Pl. Seems like the preferred workflow.
Will surely encompass it in following projects. -

September 7, 2015 at 7:07 pmThis behaviour still exists in CC 2015.
If you draw a clip from the middle of the source monitor you can multiple paste different in-outs and draw them in the timeline.
If you draw from the little only-video-icon beneath the source monitor the in and out is the same for all the copies of the same clip in the timeline.
I don´t for whats that good? This is big source for screwing up edits if you change the in-out of one instance of the clip and the other gets also edited.
