  • CS5 … Release Date – Maybe the change is coming ?…

Posted by Craig Russillroy on April 5, 2010 at 9:41 am

After starting out on FCP 1.5 a long long time ago I am now in a interesting situation regarding the arrival of CS5 and a true new workflow (mercury engine)

I really wish Apple was a little more transparent on release dates as Adobe are – this would allow us punters to look at budgets and not get a ‘we really need to up[date everything now’ mentality, as NAB looms and the product cycle of FCS is nearing Adobe are now tantalizing us with 64Bit and somewhat useable features in the real world.

Coming from a Flame background and working with AVID since 1996 I am now looking at the offering of dare I say it Premiere Pro (crikey I have said it out loud !!!) After recently using up a millionnzillion GB of space for a EX3 project and countless hours rendering out to XDcam then to H.264 for delivery I find out now that this Premiere Pro can import native Folder structure of ES XDcam – this would of saved me a lot of time – with the always changing file formats and cheaper faster turnarounds to clients i am now in a position of moving from my beloved FCS …

I guess the question is has anyone moved to the dark side ? Does it work for you ?

I do a hell of a lot of After effects and this it itself might be the deal breaker but i simply find Premiere Pro clunk and ‘college’ tool not professional

Sorry if this sounds like a ranble guys just looking for advice – hell I guess after NAB this year the waters may be a little less cloudy !!!

If you buy a plug-in such as MXF Import, you can use native MXF files in FCP, then edit on a ProRes timeline.

    Good point, Jeremy…

But I think Craig was hoping for this in FCP. BUT, the fact that Premier Pro has this built-in to its software makes folks consider the Adobe offering over FCP when using the EX series. One would think that Apple and FCS3 would have this feature, too. Currently, we are not using the EX series but may in the future, and this is the reason why we do not. Wasted time in conversion of the files to edit.

I understand that the integration with AE etc makes things easier, but I’m still seeing PP too limited.
No way to work with NANO files (other than 36/50 Mbps). For me is not an option.

[Wayne Carey] “Wasted time in conversion of the files to edit. “

I hear you. But if you want to continue to use FCP, there are options without converting every frame first.

Well, the question is…will it do what you need done? If so, then get it. Will it replace Avid/FCP for everything? No…hardly. It might make a dent in some areas, but people won’t go flocking. Not everyone wants/needs true native access to media. Some of us need the great shared workflow that Avid offers. Like the ease of editing that FCP offers….LOVE Color.

I’m still unsure of Premiere’s ability in terms of the long form workflow. And no WAY will it be used for feature films.

So…again, it boils down to need. Does this do what you need? If so…no brainer.

    There you go, Shane…

That’s it. No single piece or suite of software will do it all. That’s why we have so many choices out there. But it is rather disappointing that FCP cannot edit MXF files natively… But that’s way it goes.

Overall, I’d rather deal with FCP short-comings in our workflow than all the rest of the packages available. Ease of use and affordability is very important to us.

    [Shane Ross] ” ….LOVE Color. “
that ‘s for me enough to stand any FC shortcoming.

BTW, I said that PP supports XDCAM 422. NO.
You need to pay 300 US$ for the Main Concept plugin.
Only supports standard EX footage. Short, short..
Editing MFX in FC is not a problem.

It won’t do MXF files natively.

Just my opinion (and I say this as someone who prefers PPro over FCP), but if you’re using AE a lot (as I do) and you shoot with XDCAM EX cameras (as I do), PPro is the one I would go with. It handles the format (along with P2) better then anyone else (again- my opinon based on my experience). I love working native – it’s really very nice. And dynamic link with AE has made life so much easier.

I think CS5 is going to be big. The Mercury Playback Engine looks be a huge addition. Will FCP editors make the switch? Maybe not in large numbers. But if there is a tool out there that can help you do your job faster and better, isn’t it worth a look and/or try?

And as for feature films using PPro – you never know…maybe not today, but give it some time.
