Having a BUTTLOAD of crashes that I can’t find answers for – I would love your help troubleshooting. I’m used to editing on a Mac Pro, but just got a new Windows 7 system (system info below) – as such, I’m a little unfamiliar with what steps to take in troubleshooting.

-Crash at start-up (sometimes won’t even show the splash screen)
    -During capture/log
    -During render
    -When opening AME
-When starting Dynamic Link with Soundbooth or AE
-At random times, such as resizing a panel.
-When importing .AVI or .WMV files
-Sometimes the screen flicker on and off and I’ll get an error message about the graphics driver crashing (I’ve tried updating it).

I unfortunately do not have any screenshots of these crashes or any error messages. Will be happy to provide logs if someone can point me to where I can find those.

Now, for the system specs, including software. I’m including this info because, given the nature of Windows, any combination of these may be effecting performance. With that said, this is a brand-new system and shouldn’t be bogged down yet.

    Computer:
    HPE-580t
    Windows 7 64-bit
    Intel Core i7 3.07Ghz
    8GB of RAM
    nVidia GeForce GT 440

    I/O:
    Blackmagic Intensity Pro
    PreSonus FireStudio mobile

    Storage:
4TB RAID 0 (using stock eSATA bus)

    Software:
    Adobe Production Premium CS5
    Blackmagic Media Express
    MS Office
    ProPresenter 4
    HDVSplit
    Handbrake
    VLC Media Player
    PreSonus Studio One
    drivers for above-mentioned hardware

Thanks in advance. Please let me know if you’ve experienced issues with any of these.

You didn’t say what version of Premiere Pro you’re using. 5.0.3? 5.0.0?

Make sure that you’ve installed the most recent updates.

    Sorry, forgot to mention that – it’s up-to-date – v5.03

When crashes are happening under so many circumstances, it’s very often because of a graphics card driver. So, without even reading your list of crashing scenarios, I was suspecting that.

Then I saw that this is the last item:
“Sometimes the screen flicker on and off and I’ll get an error message about the graphics driver crashing (I’ve tried updating it).”

    That kinda cinches it.

    Have you contacted Nvidia support?

You say that you’ve updated the graphics driver. Sometimes, if a problem is introduced in a new driver, the solution is to roll back to a previous version until the bug is fixed. You might want to look into that.

Definitely sounds like a graphics card / driver issue.

Sounds like an isolated problem then, rather than some weird combo of drivers and other hardware.

Would a specific driver version fix the issue or would I need a new graphics card? If a new card, then do you have any recommendations that wouldn’t break the bank (Mercury support or not)? Our IT guy bought the 440 that’s in there now, even after showing him the list of CUDA supported cards.

I have the same problems on my machine using CS5 and Windows 7. I did update my drivers and it helped a little but I still get a lot of crashes. I am using the Black Magic Intensity Shuttle and I thought that might be the problem. So I started editing on a non Black magic timeline. That seems to be working right now. So I think it might be a Adobe/Black magic problem. I never had this problem with a mac and black magic on FCP. I hope this helps.

I’m not really sure why an IT guy would decide to intentionally NOT buy a CUDA capable card for CS5…what a waste.

I have very little experience with BlackMagic stuff so I’m not sure how their drivers are working with Cs5/5.5.

You may want to contact their tech support and ask about updates or specific conflicts, including display card drivers.

(But as Todd said, the display card drivers are the first order of business…)
