CS5 HD to SD Encoding Quality
A while back we wrote an article on the best methods to achieve studio quality downscaling of HD Source material to SD DVD. That article discussed the issues with the major NLE software solutions, such as Premiere CS4, Apple Final Cut, etc.
Well since then, Adobe has released CS5 and many people have been wondering if things have improved. The short answer is no, but we wrote a nice long new article with plenty of image comparisons for everyone to see.
It just seems so easy to implement into their software and would make it so much better. These superior downscaling algorithms are free and open source, and take less time to process than the Adobe Media Encoder. Adobe really has an opportunity here to make the quality of their encoder much better than their competition, as Final Cut, Vegas, Avid, and all the other major NLE’s are also using very poor quality downscalers.
Most of the industry is shooting in HD now. Most of them are still delivering an SD version to their clients. Which means, most of the industry is delivering substandard quality video that could look so much better. In fact, the standard definition version of the video would look better had it originally been shot and edited in SD, simply due to the poor quality downscaling algorithms used by all the top NLE programs.
I’m curious as to what the sentiment of others in the industry is. Feel free to comment.
