  • CS5 doesn’t import native Sony PMW-350 XDCAM files properly

Posted by Paul Gale on May 5, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Just posted this on the Adobe forums – but worth asking here too…

I posted a little while ago that Premiere Pro CS4 doesn’t read/import native Sony XDCAM EX PMW-350 files properly – no audio is imported.

I was hoping CS5 would change this but after some testing, it’s (almost) as bad – audio is imported this time but only 2 of the 4 channels. Audio playback is very weird – a very high pitch playback just like the footage has been significantly sped up. Maybe there’s a problem setting the sample rate etc on conforming.

If I convert the files to MXF, they seem to play and edit OK – so far.

    Anyone else got a PMW-350?

    Paul.

I’ve had a similar problem with my PMW350 and CS5. In the end – like you, I reverted to MXF re-wrapping and got all four audio channels again.

I can’t believe Adobe would make such a big thing about seamless XDcam EX workflow if it can only import 2 audio channels that stutter and sound like the chipmunks. Does anyone have any more info about a fix?

It’s now been fixed for the CS5 point release – could be up to a month or two before that arrives though.

Has this fixed the problem for you? I still cant seem to get it working! And the sony clip browser wont let me output a HD image without buying the Mainconcept plug in.

Adobe have a fix as I mentioned before but it’s still not released yet.

You can output an MXF file from clipbrowser without having to buy the MC plugin. MXF for Edit IIRC.

Paul – I’m interested to hear that you think this issue is fixed – but not released… That’s not my information. I queried the problem again, and had a reply from Adobe this week saying “we have recognised that it’s a bug, and the issue is still not resolved”. They go on to say “the issue is still under engineering team consideration” – which doesn’t sound like they’re close to sorting it to me. All a bit disappointing really…

Chris – It is fixed as I have the new importer file that Wil from Adobe sent me when we were exploring the problem. He asked me not to make it available though for obvious reasons.

So – it is there, unless they are making additional changes with any other XDCAM issues they’ve found.

Some more info on the problem on the adobe forum here:

I’m eagerly awaiting the next update and hoping the application window switching performance issue is improved as this is the biggest problem now for me.

Please try the Premiere Pro CS5 (5.0.2) update. It includes a fix for four-channel audio from Sony XDCAM EX cameras. Let us know whether this works for you.

Hooray – thanks Todd (and team). That appears to work perfectly. Excellent news as I’m about to start a major project and this will save an awful lot of re-wrapping.

Now all I have to do is figure out why PP crashes out completeley whenever I normalise a stereo track…

Anyway – thanks again. I appreciate the email letting me know this is finally fixed. Just before IBC too – so I now won’t have to try and bend someone’s ear on the Adobe stand!

Has anyone tried MainConcept Codec Suite 5.0 for XDCAM? From the description on their web site it sounds like it will allow you to natively work with XDCAM clips on the CS5 timeline a lot more easily.

The issues I was having are fixed now and XDCAM ,MP4 and .MXF work really well on the timeline, so for me, there’s no need for 3rd party plugins like that (unless it was to offer additional features I found valuable). Does it offer anything else apart from en/decode of XDCAM CODEC’s?
