CS4 timeline plays slower when rendered?
Im having some weird trouble with Adobe Premiere CS4.
Some stats:
My setup:
G5 iMac with OS x 10.6.2
2.93Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB RamIm running Adobe Premiere CS4 to edit a project which weighs about 80 gigabytes, mostly HDV 1080i60. Project & all media is being read off an external HD with plenty of free space, connected via USB 2.
The timeline is about 60 minutes long, and all media has a yellow render bar over it. I’d render it but playback is just fine. I just rendered the first ten minutes to see what would change, and playback over that portion is now slow and stutter-ish. It has been rendered, there’s a green bar over it. But it’s slow as hell. Whats going on? I’d think a rendered portion would play back better than an un-rendered one.
I’ve been looking at all the settings and in sequence settings, i found that “Video previews” is set to use an Animation codec. My guess is that when I render a piece of the timeline, it renders it into a separate preview file using the Animation Codec (duh), which might be a bit heavy to play in real time through an external HD going through USB 2. Im going to make a copy of the project and turn the codec to HDV1080i60 (which is the codec all the media is in and what the final output will be) and see how that goes, but it’s going to re-do all the previews and it’ll just take ages. Anyone got anything better?
