CS4: Project won’t load
I’m VERY frustrated right now. I have completed an 8 hr project with a deadline for today and it would not load in the media encoder.
So I restarted Premiere CS4 and now the whole project won’t load, it just freezes at 75%. Here’s everything I’ve tried:
I had a backup copy on another drive, it will NOT load either.
I’ve tried importing the project into a new project, that didn’t work. It says “damaged file or outdated elements”
I’ve tried opening the project with premiere 1.5, that didn’t work.
I’ve tried opening the project on someone else’s computer in my company through the network drive, that didn’t work. Theirs freezes just like mine.
I’ve tried calling adobe support, HAHA what a JOKE!
All other projects load just fine.
I am so FRUSTRATED right now. I’ve been using CS4 now for about 5 months and it’s just been one thing after the other. I used PP 1.5 for over 4 years without ANY problems. I switched to CS4 for the HDV features but I’ve nothing but problems with updates etc.
This project was just DV with some After effects files embedded. I did open AE this morning and make changes to some of the files which were still embedded in the PP project. This is a practice I’ve always done with no problems in PP 1.5
Right now I have ZERO confidence in this program. Thanks to this I’m missing the deadline. I’m just glad this wasn’t one of my 40 hour projects.
Please, if someone has any ideas as to what went wrong I would like to know. I can’t be having things like this happen in the future.
This is just frustrating, I take so many precautions saving and backing up my work so things like this don’t happen. -

My guess is something has happened in changing something in after effects. If you have embedded AE comps using Dynamic Link this can also cause some issues as it has to open a headless version of AE then scour the comps match names of comps to those it has embedded in the PPro project, so if you have changed the name of a comp you will have created a problem in finding the comps that are nested.
Load up times are also a killer when working on larger projects using Dynamic Link.
I would render out what you have in AE. Then I would attempt to load the ppro project and not let it find the files. so everything is offline. Best way to do this is to change the name of the folder/s that contain your media.
Then relink everything except the DL comps. You need to replace them with the renders. I know this is convoluted but this is the workaround. The entire project will need to reindex and conform again, but just let it and you should be back on track.

Thanks Jon, I’m going to give this a try.
It has to be AE related, because this happened right after I made a couple of changes to some files in AE which were still embedded in PP CS4.
With most of the projects I work on, I use PP and AE at the same time importing and exporting in and out of each program. I’m always changing AE files still embedded in PP. I’ve done this for the last 3 years constantly with ZERO problems using PP 1.5 and AE. I’m on probably my 5th project in PP CS4 so far and I’m already having a major issue using this workflow.
There’s also several other bugs with CS4 that has me scratching my head.

Well, moving the files didn’t work. It still won’t load.
Now I’m afraid to even use the program again. I can’t afford to spend days on a project and then lose it for no reason.
CS4 just has too many bugs for me.
-audio/video rendering out of sync despite being in sync in the timeline.
-updates screw things up
-stop button on monitor doesn’t stop time indicator until you release the mouse making it virtually impossible to make exact cuts. This is VERY annoying to me and time consuming.
I’ve loved everything about 1.5 but CS4 is a huge dissapointment and it looks like I’m now going to have to explore other options for HDV editing.
CS4 sucks.

You can try to clear the CACHE (all pek and cfa file)
Depend on you preference, find the cache and erase all files.
If one file is corrupt, it can crash PP4.
Even if you move your files, i think it still load the working files in the cache.
I have others littles problems but PP CS4 look stable if the system is stable.

I’ve moved all the files to another location and I’ve deleted the entire PPCS4 cache folder and the project still won’t load.
