    Hi Cows,

I’ve searched the boards, but didn’t see much in the way of describing my issue. Here’s what I know…. I installed 2GB more RAM for a total of 5GB and I added a Kona 3 card to my system. Since then, AE CS3 is crawling. It never did so this bad before.

I was told that AE only uses and sees 3GB of RAM so I’m confused why the added RAM would cause a problem. Nor should the Kona card.

My question is basically, are there any settings I should check and tweak?

    I’m running:
    Power Mac G5
    PowerPC G5 (1.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed: 2.3 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 5 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.15 GHz

I was working with HD footage, DVC Pro 720 setting… ,That may be the problem right there. If so, what settings should I use when mixing with DVCPro 720 footage?

Thanks and happy Turkey day to those who celebrate!

[Dave LaRonde] “I recently learned on the Final Cut Pro forum that Macs tend to like RAM that comes in sizes of powers of two.”

This isn’t quite true. You must install RAM DIMMs in equally sized pairs in Mac Pros and G5s (I believe this applies some of the earlier iMac G5s, but no longer).

This means that whenever you install RAM you must install 2 DIMMs of equal size/specification. The specific location as to where you should install them for optimum performance can vary from computer to computer so you should read your user manual.

If your Mac Pro shipped with 2x 512MB DIMMs you could add 2x 1GB DIMMs for a total of 3GB and your Mac Pro should be plenty happy.

Assuming your RAM was installed properly, I would recommend taking out the Kona card first, and seeing if that improves performance. I’ve seen some funky behavior after installing a Kona card. If you can confirm that is the problem then you might need to update drivers/firmware or contact Kona.

[Dave LaRonde] “If you decidec to be an early adopter of the new Leopard OS, know that AE does NOT play nice with it.”

This is good advice, that said I haven’t had any problems what so ever using AE on Leopard (but you might!).

As I understand it, you have to install the RAM as Darby has described. Which I have, G5 shipped with 2x512MB, I’ve since installed 4x1GB for a total of 5GB.

I’ll have to compare an old SD project and see if it runs slow.

As for the multi-processor setting… that’s the checkbox in the preferences panel, right? I assume that should speed up the previews and renders. Some are taking more than 20 hours!!! And they’re not even that involved…. simple builds.

I’ll run some other tests when I get back to the office on Monday. And for the record… I’m not an early adopter to Leopard. I’d like to be, but I’m a chicken! Or I suppose today, I’d be a turkey!

Happy Thanksgiving and thanks for responding.

Turn that Preferences > Multiprocessing > Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously checkbox off.

    I don’t know what it’s supposed to do, but it sure doesn’t. I was doing some simple 3d animations in AE and kept getting OPEN GL errors, so I increased Memory settings and clicked that checkbox on. Took hours to figure out what I had done wrong. Next thing I knew, simple renders that should take seconds were now taking minutes to render. {in unrelated news, I still had Open GL errors}

I’m working on a non-intel quad with 16GB of memory.
    Running AE CS3. Kona LHe.

Anyone else have that Open GL issue?
