CS3 Multiple Issues
Hi, I’ve been using creative cow for advice for a couple years now and this is the first time I’ve been stumped and haven’t found anything like my issues! I work at a school where we use CS3 on several PC workstations and I have 3 issues that I could really use help with.
The first one involves ‘ghost’ frames appearing when I play back the timeline. Randomly a frame from around 1 or 2 seconds earlier reappears on the screen and then the video continues playing. The result is a quick 1 frame flash and is a right pain when editing as you can never get a real feel for the video. I’ve tried checking out my graphics card and updated all the drivers but still got the issue. I’m assuming this may be a simple fix as I am not having any other types of video playback issue except in Prem Pro but it has me stumped!
The second issue is on the same workstation where Prem Pro is pixelising the footage. In the source window the footage is fine and is fine when viewed as a still frame in the program window but the second you hit play the footage becomes extremely pixelised. This is only occurring on some clips and not on others despite all the footage being filmed on the same camera, in the same way, with the same settings. I’m not sure really why this might happen so I’m looking for any pointers at all really!
The third and final issue I have seen happen before and may just be down to memory. After using the program for a prolonged period (anything over about 30 minutes) the program locks up in when you playback the timeline. Now on the 2 stations this is occurring (both new) 1 crashes out and 1 eventually corrects itself. I’ve seen similar issues but only on old computers where they didn’t have the processing power to really handle an edit but these are not pushing the computers by any stretch of the imagination. Is there any reason why premiere would get locked into a playback situation other then hardware issues?
Sorry for all the techy issues. I already have the IT dept. here working on it, however, any help from you guys would be much appreciated!

You should probably post your machine specs for the computer savvy to inspect.
Also, what codec are you using for capture, and what timeline settings are you using compared to the footage shot.
Without any of this info, it sounds to me like the footage needs rendering for smooth playback.
As for the locking-up issue, could that be heat related??

As for timeline and capture settings I’m working off a DV Pal Widescreen 16:9 (1.422) setting on both capture and timeline, running at 25 fps. The footage is all DV Pal shot on mini-dv tape.
Cheers for the overheating idea – I’ll check that with IT when they head over!

CS3 is getting pretty long in the tooth now, are you still running in a WindowsXP environment or Mac?
It would help to know if you are working with DV footage or something else?
Source Monitor maybe set to playback in High Quality or Automatic where the clip is not affected by any effects or adjustments so it can playback fine as a raw file from the HDD. The Program Monitor could be having difficulties playing back Automatic at Highest Quality on some clips if they have had any alterations to the original clip by adding an effect or even moving the clip by only 1 pixel or scaled at all (which may have happened by accident). Check that the clips playing back with less than clear quality are not using any effects and reset the motion settings in the effect control panel. See if that helps them playback better.
Overall the pixelation is not a problem, just a way to view the playback without needing to render to see it. It won’t affect the quality of the final export. If you want to check, just export out that section.

PS: If you are running CS3 on Win7 in XP Mode it may not be supporting the software properly as it was not intended to be run on Win7 or later versions of the Mac OSX before Leopard.
