CS2 vs CS3
Posted by Brian Lynn on September 13, 2007 at 11:32 pmI am wondering what is people’s experience with CS3 vs. CS2 for Windows, Core 2 Duo processor… My CS2 works but I know I’ve got only 50% proc. working…
I’ve tried google search for benchmarks documenting CS2 vs. CS3 but all the ones I can find are for Mac… I’m Windows. Anyone a CS2 user upgrader? How is CS3 compared to CS2?
Thanks!

September 13, 2007 at 11:47 pmI can tell you that AE CS3 is able to make use of multiple cores/processors and that AE 7.0 is not. This results in noticeably increased render/preview speeds, but I can’t give you any numbers to go along with that.

September 14, 2007 at 10:28 amCS3 works as exactly as Nucleo standard + AE7 would do I believe.

September 14, 2007 at 2:52 pmyou should notice a render/preview speed difference… it won’t be 2 times faster with 2 processors, since several of more common render intensive effects/features in ae7 used multiprocessing (like gausian blur and motion blur, etc.). but, maybe, 1.5 times faster…
you’d also like to have about 4gb of ram for cs3 to take full advantage of those 2 processors. also be aware that you may need cs3 versions of third-party effects. most of these are free updates, but some may require upgrading, just look on their websites for cs3 compatibility.

September 15, 2007 at 8:13 pmIt’s important to note that on a 32-bit OS, only 3GB of RAM can be assigned to applications, with the /3GB switch in Boot.ini on Windows. AE CS3 can use up to 3GB of RAM if this switch is in place and you have 4GB physical RAM installed. 1GB goes to the OS kernal. This is a limitation of Windows 32.

September 18, 2007 at 12:24 amAbout that 3gb limit… I’ve read quite a bit about MAC vs. PC, 32 bit vs. 64…
If you are running Windows 64, and have say 8gb of ram, will AE take advantage of this?
Will AE even run on Windows 64?
I know on a MAC it seems no matter what you do you’re limited by how AE is built as to how much ram it can utilize… Windows does not have this issue, so by all I’ve read AE should be able to use 8gb of ram on my Windows64 machine??
Thanks to everyone who posted!

September 18, 2007 at 2:14 amI had read in the Adobe forum somewhere recently that CS3 is NOT designed to run on a 64-bit OS. If it does run, it probably can’t address more than 3GB RAM. I would take this with a grain of salt, but applications being what they are, I’d tend to believe that it’s true.
