CRTs, LCDs and Detail Levels
Here’s a trick question for everyone from the Varicam Virgin:
I’m doing my first tests for an HD television program, using both a 13″ Sony HDCRT and a 15″ Panasonic HDLCD (and yes, scopes). I’ve learned quickly that the LCD is inherently – for lack of a better word – “grainier” than a CRT. I like a crisp, sharp image so I have jacked the detail up for my “basic” look (to +20 on the Master Detail). This looks perfect on the CRT, but I find myself thinking that nobody watching this will be viewing it on an HDCRT! Everyone seeing it in HD will be watching on their Plasma set or whatever. And now I’m second-guessing.
Is it possible that what looks awesome on a CRT will render screwey on a consumer HD set? Should I be backing off the detail and judging the image texture more on the LCD I have? Most impotrantly, will an HD image expanded on a large screen LCD set tend to look softer (as in SD on a CRT) or perhaps grainier still than a smaller LCD?
All thoughts welcome.
