Cross dissolves
Dear All,
Just when I think I have everything worked out, something else happens in Premiere Pro. When I apply a Cross Dissolve (at center of cut) between three individual clips, it looks as if the last few frames of Clip 1 changes vertical position and then does the same thing when dissolving from Clip 2 into Clip 3.The settings are:
Premiere Project = 720×480 (0.9)
Clip 1 and 3 = 720×480 (0.9)
Clip 2 = 720×480 (1.2)I have recaptured and exported Clip 2 several times to match the project but this still happens unless I place the Dissolve at end of cut for Clip 1 and at start of cut for Clip 3. This is fine for what I need to do for now, but I’m very curious to what I’m doing wrong. I have various individual clips throughout the timeline at 720×480(0.9) and (1.2) with cross dissolves (at center) that aren’t effected as the first section is.
Does anyone know what causes this?

Hi Fiona,
So is this a 4:3 or 16:9 project, since you are mixing clips?
As a temporary fix that might get you by, rather than use the Cross Dissolve, try going old school – overlap ends of clips on two different tracks and use Opacity keyframe to get your dissolve and see if you still get the glitch. I’m guessing it is the mixing of aspect ratios causing this.

Can’t say I’ve seen this problem personally, but another work around would be to use the 4:3 clips on one track and the 16:9 clips on another. Then when you want to cross-dissolve use the effect as usual to the top most track and leave enough clip under the cross dissolve for it to appear as a cross dissolve.
If you have 4:3 clips in a 16:9 project I would use the 16:9 above the 4:3 clips. This would allow the cross dissolve effect to work properly as the pillar boxing of 4:3 in a 16:9 is alpha and not actually black which would make the dissolve work only over the 4:3 space of video and not the sides if using the 4:3 footage above the 16:9.
Hope I didn’t confuse you with the description. Just keep the 16:9 footage on top of the 4:3 footage. 🙂

Thank you Jeff and Jon for the advice. I placed the 16:9 clips on a separate track and that seemed to do the trick. The funny thing, however, is that I have another section with a dissolve between a 4:3 and 16:9 clip and there wasn’t any issues.
