Cross Dissolves Not Working Properly

Are you sure both clips are touching each other? You will see this if there is a 1 frame gap.

I had this happen to me a while back. As I recall, after double-clicking the dissolve I first had to drag the dissolve left or right (whichever direction you can). Then, you can change the length of the dissolve.

There is no gap between the clips. I have tried double-clicking the dissolve and moving it left or right, but that is still not working. I am at a loss.

Quite often, I will drag a dissolve into the first shot in a sequence, intending to create a fade-in. For some reason, FCP interprets my action as “Please make a one-frame fade-in.” It’s a matter of precisely where I drop the effect on the timeline. It always winds up working – it just takes a second effort, being careful to hover long enough to see the faint shadow of a properly timed 30-frame fade-in. Once I have a 30-frame fade-in I just drag it back to whatever length is appropriate.

So I have seen this, sort of – but on fades, not dissolves.

Your clips probably aren’t long enough. If one or both of the clips actually ends where the cut is that you are trying to cross dissolve, there isn’t anything there for the software to dissolve into. I.e. FCE needs 15 frames from each side of the cut to create the cross dissolve for a 1-second transition. Those 15 frames don’t come from visible frames in the clips, but from the end portions you have already cut out. If you haven’t cut any frames, there isn’t anything for FCE to create the dissolve from.

For a standard 1-second dissolve, cut off 15 frames from the offending clip or clips, then pull them back together and apply the cross dissolve.
