  • Cross Dissolve transitions

At times, when dropping a clip into the timeline with either “overwrite” or “insert” with transition, I do not get the full cross disolve time to the clip I am inserting, the transition is a “blink” effect more than a dissolve. I have placed the playhead on the last frame of the preceeding clip to be sure. There is no further video down the timeline past where I am attempting the transition insert. Today’s issue is transitioning from a QT rendered file from Live Type to a video clip out of the Viewer. I get a full transition time in the audio track, although I do not have any audio under the Live Type clip, but I do not get the full video transition dissolve, just that quick “blink” Normally, it is about 1 second. Ideas? Thanks

You must have “handles” (“extra footage”) on one or both of two adjacent clips to allow a dissolve (or other “Mixing” transition).

So, assuming you wanted a 1 sec. transition between any two ten-second clips:

    a) You’d need at LEAST 11 seconds total length (one second of “extra footage”) on the end of the FIRST clip

    b) Or, you’d need at LEAST 10.5 seconds total length on BOTH clips (half sec. of “extra footage” at the end of the FIRST clip, and half sec. of “extra footage” at the beginning of the SECOND clip.

    c) Or, you could make the “Out-point” several frames EARLIER in the first clip and/or make the “In-point” several frames LATER in the second clip and the transition could then be the length that you moved the point(s).

    -OR-

You could make a STILL-FRAME of the last frame of your first clip and dissolve THAT out for as long as you want.

    -OR-

Change the SPEED of your clip(s) (slow-mo) and that will allow for a longer dissolve length.

Thanks Matt, The QT Live Type clip I am dissolving from is 10 seconds long and the clip I am going into is about 2.0 minutes long. I did try setting the “in” point of the dissolve 2 seconds back into the Live Type clip and that did not work. Do you think the only solution would be a freeze frame and then dissolve over it?

Put one of the clips on a new video track above the other.

Make sure they overlap by enough frames, and adjust the “Opacity” on the upper clip (in the Motion tab) to create a dissolve.

Thanks again Matt, that was the trick!
