Cross Conversion with LH
Posted by Timothy Eaton on September 18, 2006 at 8:36 amIs the AJA LH capable of cross conversion from 1080i to 720p on ingest? What about frame rate? 1080 29.97 to 720 24? Our primary camera is a Panasonic Varicam, but we use the Sony Z1U as a 2nd/Crash camera. We’d like to stay progressive, but right now our workflow means ingesting the Varicam as 1080i in order to match the Sony. Is it possible to work the other way around with the LH?
Thanks, Tim Eaton

September 18, 2006 at 4:38 pmHi Tim,
Only the Xena 2k has HD cross conversion. The LH just has HD to SD down conversion. The cross-conversion on the Xena 2k does allow capturing of 720p59.94 data from a 1080i29.97 source, but you can’t capture to 720p23.976 from a 1080i29.97 source.

September 18, 2006 at 4:46 pmThanks Dezmond,
If we cross convert to 720p 59.94 would the clip play on a 24p timeline? Also, what happens if we shoot in Sony’s Cineframe 24 mode? Would that cross convert to 24p?

September 18, 2006 at 6:04 pmThe 720p59.94 wouldn’t play properly on a 24p timeline with re-rendering the file to 720p23.976. This is due to the fact the AJA automatically adds the 2:3 pulldown on a 720p23.976 timeline so then the 720p59.94 file would play in slo-mo. Hmmm…So basically you want to shoot 720p23.976 with the Varicam and also shoot 1080sF23.976 with the Sony HDV Camera( in their 24F mode) and then have them both play nice in PPro2/Xena with the least possible hassle. I don’t work with Varicam (only experimented) so any ideas would be pure conjecture, but it seems that you would have to render one format or the other. You could capture the 720p23.976 Varicam material ( to a 720p23.976 file) over SDI and then capture the 1080sF23.976 data via FireWire as HDV MPEG2( FYI – It works capturing 1080sF23.976 HDV over FireWire with the Canon XL-H1 so I assume it should work fine with the Sony 24F mode too). Then you could either software render the 720p23.976 to 1080sF23.976 or vice-versa.
Also, the Xena 2k doesn’t have Analog Inputs (only outputs – The Xena LH and LS have Analog Inputs though) so you couldn’t capture Analog from your Sony HDV camera without an Analog to SDI Convertor. Since it doesn’t seem that the Xena 2k cross-conversion could help in your scenario it might be better just to get the LH since it does have Analog Inputs( in case you ever need to use that for your Sony HDV Camera )

September 18, 2006 at 6:09 pmExcellent Dezmond. Thanks for your help. I’ll try the CF 24FPS mode for HDV capture.

September 18, 2006 at 7:07 pmI would recommend you test shoot the Sony HDV CineFrame 24 mode before you do a project with it…
My recommendation with the Z1 (I have one) is to shoot in Euro mode (25 fps) in CineFrame 25 and edit it as 25p or clock it down to 24 at the point of post…

September 19, 2006 at 7:15 pmHI FOLKS.
now that you guys are talking about cross conversion,
I’m about to buy a Xena card, and I would like to know wich it’s the best Xena (LH or 2K)card to this:My project its 720p 23.976 (captured with HVX200), I’M going work with tga or avi sequence exported from finalcut, and finish with adobe premiere pro 2 and after effects. My broadcast monitor it’s the JVC DT-V1710CGU, that does 720p (50p or 60p) and 1080 24psf or 1080i.
So i need to play a 720p 23.98 sequence from premiere pro 2 and play it out to a component 720p (50p or 60p) or 1080/24psf or 1080i.
Can I do that?
thanks in advance.

September 20, 2006 at 12:32 amHi Bernardo,
The Xena 2K will offer you the most features for the conversion types you are needing.
From both boards, a 720p23.976 project will output at 720p60 automatically.
From the 2K board, you may also output a 720p23.976 project or file at either 1080i29.97 or 480i29.97
Hope this helps!

September 20, 2006 at 1:14 amWell…I use CineForm Prospect which simply does it on ingest with a setting.
With the AJA card, I suspect you might try to capture HDV via FW and edit using an AJA uncompressed 23.97fps timeline.
I’m not sure how you would control the audio pitch change this way though. CineForm converts the file. If you simply load a 25fps file and interpret it as a 24fs file, I don’t think Premiere will be able to maintain the audio pitch…
