  • Cropping?? Help with an effect please…..

Hello. I work for an exercise company and I am trying to figure out how to do a certain effect. I am very firmiliar with FCP but i have just recently starting using After Effects.

In a video that was shot, we have a model using our exercise equipment, and I want to make one area of her body “glow’ that is being affected by the equipment. I was thinking I could just double layer the video and crop off the top layer so that all is remaining is the body part that I want to glow. I cant figure out how to crop the video in After effects though.

Can anyone tell me how to crop video and how to go about doing this effect?

I would really appreciate any help.

    thanks,

    Keith

    Hi,

There’s no “Crop” as you would find it in FCP, but there are a series of masking tools you can use. For a simple crop, have your top layer selected and use the rectangle or elipse tool to make a basic mask.

If this doesn’t give you the effect you’re after then you could use the Pen tool to rotoscope your footage, essentially drawing your own shape then animating it with keyframes.

Adobe’s online help will give you a good place to start. Masking is integral to making many effects work, so it will pay to get a good grasp of them.

    Good luck with your project,
    Ben
