    FCPS 2, g5 dual 2.5

Trying to output QT files for playback on video projector in normal NTSC 4:3 aspect…the projector will be hooked up to a PC and play thru whatever inane video player the PC uses…therefore it will be displaying more of the image than a normal 4:3 frame….

problem is: in my FCP project I shifted some images in the 4:3 frame using the Motion tab…thererfore when they are played in QT player or on a computer, or thru a projector (as in this case) the extra bits of the image off to the side and top and bottom that would never be visible on a 4:3 frame are now visible…

if I crop the image, then I get a black box around the outside…do I resize the output file in terms of pixels or do I have to create a mask in QT to play without a black border?

    Please help.

Just blow up everything a small percentage until the edges look clean in the canvas when view is set to 100% — the blowup will look just fine. I like it better than cropping in a situation such as yours.

This is one method, however you lose reolution by zooming in…and I can’t sacrifice any when using DV…

Its not even noticeable, especially because you have nothing sharper to compare it to.

But more importantly, why did you ask about blowing it up in the first place if you had already made up your mind against it?

I myself notice a quality loss that may also be noticeable by the client…I never asked about actually blowing up the image as I’ve always known that that creates a small but still present quality loss…I am simply looking for a method to make the QT playback imitate the 4:3 monitor playback…

Can you refocus the image with the projector or send a 4:3 aspect ratio out of your computer?

the projector basically takes a direct feed from a PC which I’m not terribly familiar with, but know enough to say that because the PC is just playing a QT file, it displays the full QT frame as opposed to a 4:3 frame.

the projector can’t be refocused to crop out any of the information…secondly, i want the QT file to only contain the same frame space as the 4:3 so that if the client wants to play it on their PC without the projector, they won’t come back to me and say- what’s that black around the outside of the image?

What do you mean by the QT frame? When you choose Present video in QT, and choose an output, it will playback full raster 4:3 if your video is 4:3. So if you choose a VGA output, and have that VGA output plugged into a 4:3 device like an NTSC projector, then tell QT to present video out the VGA port, you’ll simply get a video output. Progressive of course.

What extra QT “frame” are you talking about? Do your PC folks not have the latest QT or QT pro that displays full screen? Perhaps they need to upgrade or shell out the 30 bucks or whatever it is these days.
