  • cropping: motion tab crop or mask shape effect?

I’m looking to do a simple rectangle mask of a graphic over video. The graphic has 3 names that i want to sequentially dissolve on and rather than making 3 separate graphics, i did one with the full build cropping out each name.

the problem is that when i crop using the clip’s motion tab properties, the graphic gets soft, much like what happens when you position the whole graphic frame up or down one pixel. sliding the bottom crop slider to 0 brings it back clean, but anything after softens it. at first i thought i was messing with the positioning. then i tried rendering. neither helped. then, i tried using the mask shape effect for the same deal and suprisingly it crops the graphic and keeps it clean!

my question: why/how is the motion tab crop causing a softening while the mask shape effect does the same thing cleanly? is anyone else having this issue? i want to keep as much in real time as possible.

my config: g5 dual 2.7 w/ 4 gigs RAM, blackmagic decklink hd pro, fcp 5.0, mac os 10.4.1 tiger, GeForce 6800. graphic is 720×486 targa with alpha in an uncompressed 8bit sequence.

    thanks

I’m pretty sure that when you use the Motion tab on a vector based graphic, it softens it… turning into a bit mapped graphic… is that what is happening here? i.e. you used something like Title 3D for the titles, then used the motion tab’s crop right? Reason the matte doesn’t do this is it is preserving the vector graphic.
