  • Cropping a video to a different ratio?

Posted by Grant Wilber on March 24, 2011 at 10:12 am

I have a client that is giving me a screencapture recording of a power point slideshow with their voiceover. It’s coming from different peoples computer so each file has a different ratio. The actual slides are 4:3 however so I’m trying to get rid of the black bars on the side. Is there a way to crop a video and change the aspect ratio?

Which kind of files are you getting from your client?

Cropping may seem logical, but it is seldom if ever the solution. Instead, the answer lies in scaling up the video to a larger size that forces the letterboxed or pillarboxed portions of the frame off-screen beyond the edges of the frame. This will make the images softer or may possibly introduce other artifacts, but it’s a necessary evil if you have eliminate the black areas.
