does either cropping or zooming in on a clip in my timeline change the aspect ratio?

If im shooting in 720 by 480 and i need to crop in something other than a perfect rectangle, will this change my aspect ratio to something other than 720 – 480? would it be better to zoom?

where can i learn the industry standard for setting up and organizing my software? FCP4

    Neither change your aspect ratio.

If you crop, your TV will just have black areas where you cut off the image and the video will stay at the 4:3 aspect ratio.

If you “zoom” (it’s not really a zoom, it just enlarges your image) the image will get larger, isolating a portion, filling the whole frame and not creating any black areas on your TV screen. This will also keep the aspect ratio at 4:3.

I’d enlarge the image, but not too much or you will lose quality.

http://www.lynda.com has a good section on Setting up FCP. It’s great resource. It costs $25 a month to watch as many videos on as many subjects as you like. I’d have a look there.

Was there any specific part of setting up FCP that was giving you trouble?

    Cheers,
    Simon

Oh yeah and I forgot to mention: the training menu option top right of the COW site. There’s a DVD tutorial in there by a chap called Shane Ross. He’s one of the FCP Forum Leaders.
And there is always the Apple Pro Training Series books from Peachpit Press.
