Crop image in after effects?
Sorry if this has been answered many times before. I cropped an image in photoshop and hoped it would be able to stay cropped when I imported into after effects. Can it be done like that? If not what is the best method to do this? Thanks in advance

Yes, unless it is a smart object (and even still, I think AE rasterizes these which bakes in all changes) then cropping an image in Photoshop is destructive; cropping effectively throws away all the pixels that were outside the image area.

I would much rather have the crop applied in AE – it gives me better control over the project, since if I want to adjust the crop I can do it straight in AE. The easiest way to crop is to draw a mask on the layer.

I’m not sure I’m following what you said. You’re saying you cropped an image in photoshop and in after effects it didn’t appear cropped?
I can only imagine you used the crop tool with the hide option selected(there’s a hide and a delete option) and then you imported a psd. There’s no other way a cropped IMAGE would appear different otherwise.
If that’s the case you can still tell AE during importing to crop it to the PS canvas.
