    I’m trying to crop down a 1920×1080 video to a client’s specifications of 1920×803 or 1:2.39. However, they want to preserve the quality of the video and requested that I actually crop either the top/bottom or a combination of both to achieve this.

    trying to salvage reasonable images aside, does anyone know the easiest way to go about this? Thanks!

    Create a new sequence with the desired dimensions and use the Position or Attach Point settings in the Effect Controls panel to adjust the vertical center of your footage. Create keyframes at the beginning and end of each shot (or cut the video with the razor tool) if you would like to change the positioning at different points in the video.

    Note that 803 is not a good number for encoding, especially if you plan to use H.264. Use an even number instead, and preferably one that is divisible by 16; 804 will work, 800 or 816 would be better.

    I found the best way for me to go about it was to create a ‘title’ rectangle that letterboxed the desired aspect ratio and laid that over the entire timeline. I could then adjust each clip to where I wanted it inside the same crop. I then took off the rectangle and did the cropping itself in adobe media encoder. worked pretty easily.

    why is it better to have an even number out of curiosity?

    IIRC, Adobe Media Encoder does not support odd number dimensions with the H.264 codec. In general, multiples of 16 are better because of the encoding structure of DCT codecs where images are broken down into grids of macroblocks.
