I have an HDCAM SR with video that is 16×9 1.78 1920×1080 – I want to ingest this into FCP and then output a 1.33 Side Matted master.

I know I can crop, but I am not sure of the best way to do this and what the left and right crop setting should be to get the correct aspect of the center cut image. Is there a simple, known answer for this?

    Timothy,

I can’t think of a reason to pillarbox video in a widescreen format. Letterbox yes, center punch yes, but pillarbox doesn’t make much sense.

When scaling a 16×9 frame into a 4×3 frame the sides of the 16×9 frame match the frame edge without a pillarbox. So, unless there’s something I’m missing in your post can you clarify?

Indeed, the pillarbox look is an odd one to go for as a final output but it can be useful in order to pre-visualise what effect a broadcaster’s 4:3 or 14:9 center cut might have on your video …. there are many free and paid guide overlays or plugins you can download to show or matte out these areas. I have one you’re welcome to, its on my webpage at https://web.me.com/andymees (its called Andy’s Guides 2) … or if you really do just want to pillarbox then you can grab my Andy’s Letterboxer plugin at the same site. Set the value to -25 (Positive values will Leterbox, Negative values will Pillarbox).
    Good luck
    Andy

Pillarbox HD is a fairly standard item on International delivery lists from Distributors abd Sales Agents. It is simply a pan and scan HD master for creating full-frame 4:3 NTSC and PAL delivery masters to broadcasters and the like.
